The Loft Conversion : Bathroom Ideas

High flush toilet

As I mentioned in a previous post, we are about to have our loft converted and I am using the blog, not only to share my ideas (and hopefully gain more)  but also to help crystallise my decision process.  It’s also an opportunity for me to flex my creative muscle and perhaps to dip into the world of Pinterest and Instagram a little bit more for ideas.

I always find that an idea or scheme tends to come from something quite simple which then forms the basis of the design.  Our existing bathroom colours and design all stemmed from a towel that I liked.  The towel duly accompanied us to every bathroom, tile and paint showroom until I could see it all coming together.  Always good to have a dry run with your props in a pre-prepared bathroom mock-up in Homebase!  No point not liking it when it’s too late is there.

So, we will gain a largish bedroom and bathroom which will be all for us.  Grown-up space.

The bathroom is getting the attention at the moment and our recent foray into a bathroom showroom has shown how much choice there is today compared to eight years ago.  I started with an idea in my head which involved a bit of pattern.  We are also working slightly blind here as we only have rough room sizes to go on at the moment but we will need to buy quickly once things are underway.

Of course, all the ideas I am seeing are in huuuuuge bathroom displays and there will have to be a scaling down exercise to fit our humble abode!

Bizarrely, I was immediately drawn to a marble effect sink.  Initially thinking how ugly it was, I kept finding myself going back to it. They say everything makes a resurgence and marble it seems is no exception.  Up until now, I would have given marble a complete swerve.  Whilst very fashionable and decadent in the 70s, marble has probably been quite high on my ‘gawdy’ factor list for many years.  I really love this bathroom set up and the colour ways.

Marble sink. Patterned tiles. Higt flush toilet.

As tends to be the way, I have since on a recent holiday found myself bumping into marble sinks everywhere.  The hotel room and possibly every bathroom I visited.  I have to confess to having become rather taken with the idea now.

I am also very taken with the high flush toilets.  The very same ones that everyone couldn’t wait to rip out and replace with the low flush modern systems.  Funny that!  I need to seek some more practical advise on the wisdom of this but I can see it working quite nicely alongside the sink.  In terms of practicalities, I’m not sure we will have sufficient height for this sort of toilet.  I’m absolutely loving these tiles though.  This is the pattern loving part of me being addressed.

I am also rather fond of the white brick tiles in the bathroom – this idea lends itself to the pattern being on the floor.

White brick tiles.

I pretty much have a free hand on colour schemes and designs in the home and Iron Man’s only stipulation is that we have a walk in shower cubicle that doesn’t feel like a telephone box with a decent pressure shower.   We have seen several that would be suitable and favour those with minimum chrome.  Something like this would be perfect.

With the addition of some not so modern taps perhaps.

So I guess on reflection, a couple of points are starting to emerge in terms of colour – I seem to be drawn towards grey and white.  The style is leaning towards old-fashioned with a bit of a modern twist.

The thing I want to particularly avoid is having everything in a line.  Obviously the bathroom won’t be huge but I do like to create an illusion of space where possible.

The next step is to address some of the practical issues around sizes and heights.

What do we think of the marble idea then?

Would love to hear views and suggestions.

  1. Do you need a licence to work out the tap system? Although it looks like an improved version of the ones in US hotels my late hubby and I stayed in. Took us a long time to work out the over the tub ones.
    Much prefer our Aussie ones.
I love your grey and white idea. I think it will give the illusion of more space – but not the glariness of all white.
Not quite sure what high flush and low flush is – but importantly, you do.

Have fun and enjoy the extra space.

    1. Interesting question Susan. I am guessing that you, like me, have been a victim of the cold shower to the head shock whilst in a different bathroom! I’m interested to hear that the Aussie ones are different? No doubt the tap situation will be a bit of a learning curve when we do change over. I’m with you on the ‘fridge’ effect of the all white. Plays havoc on grouting issues too. That’s probably a look I would have favoured 10 years ago. High flush is as per the picture – there is a pipe that runs between the cistern and the toilet? Thank you – as always, for your valued comment.

  2. Interestingly, I have always swerved away from marble too, but a friend had chosen it for worktops in her new kitchen and it is stunning. I love subway tiles too – so neat. Good luck with it xx #HomeEtc

    1. Thanks for commenting Lisa. Interesting that your friend has it in the kitchen. It’s clearly making a comeback. Aaah subway tiles – is that what they are called. Initial investigations are showing that there are many ‘subway’ tiles to choose from! Not always as easy as you first think.

  3. I think the marble sink is calling you, so you should go for it! I like the black one. In terms of the shower, could you do without a cubicle-style one and have the same area with a open wet-room style one?
I like all your ideas, I think it’s coming together nicely! Best of luck with it all #HomeEtc

    1. I think it is too! How fickle we are with our fashion. Interesting point on the shower and one we have briefly discussed – my fear is wet house with it being in the loft. Thanks for commenting

  4. When you first mentioned marble my first reaction was ‘noooo’ but then I scrolled down and they actually look really great- I love the black one in particular! I think you could definitely make them work with the other pieces that you like. I’ll be interested to see your final design, as we did a loft conversion last year and it can be a challenge to work with the space. I’ve got our finished loft bathroom on my blog in the ‘home and interiors’, then ‘our home’ section if you fancy a look? We’re now moving house again, with the aim of doing a loft sometime soon, so I love getting new inspiration! #Homeetc

    1. I need to get cutting and pasting the pictures and samples for the next step! We also need to have the planning meeting with the drawings so I might have to reign things in a bit with the sizing. I shall dart over and have a look at your blog now as that sounds like it may give me a good idea. Thanks for commenting Becky.

    1. Yes, I’m coming down on the lighter colour but I need to start cutting out my ideas and building the picture. I fear the darker may look a little ostentatious in our humble abode but I need to put some ideas together. Thanks for commenting Gemma.

  5. Ooh exciting!!!! I LOVE a project… or actually, I love *thinking* and planning for a project , rather than the actual physical *doing* the project!! I love the grey and white colour-scheme you have planned and I really love the idea of the marble sink… gives the feeling of a French Chateaux! Trés fabuleux!! 🙂 Can’t wait to see how it all turns out — please link up the process!! 🙂 Caro x #HomeEtc

    1. I too am the thinker and the planner and for the purposes of the forthcoming changes, I foresee a lot of mock ups and cuttings out and mocking up paper rooms. I’m really loving the marble and I hope the designs play out in a smaller bathroom. I shall keep you posted. Have loved joining up. Interiors is a new area recently introduced to my blog and I’ve really enjoyed reading the posts here. Thank you for hosting.

  6. I love the shower, I have white tiles in my bathroom, floor & wall & my only complaint is the cement that holds them up or together is a pain to keep clean!! I have granite in my kitchen (very similar to marble) & it does get water marks because it’s black so a lighter color would work better. What a perfect guest room!!

    1. Yes, it’s the grouting isn’t it – I have seen lots of different colours so that is something worth considering as it all looks completely different depending on the colour of the grouting. I would definitely go for the lighter marble effect. Is that a hint?!
